The idea of the Outer Fire is that, instead of outer space, a void of fire is above the atmosphere of Faierie. It need not be exceedingly hot (or Faierie would burn up), and fluctuates in temperature. Its color could change as well, or have lumps of hot and cold fire which emulate the sun and moon. The major difference is that the fire consumes anything which journeys too far away from Faierie, reducing it to dust (or Life dust in the case of fay), which floats back down. Perhaps it is very hot, but radiation functions differently in Faierie than on earth.
If things become more permanent when near the Adamant, then they should become more temporary and Malleable as they get near the Outer Fire. Fayrie craftsmen would live as near as possible to the Outer Fire, but then travel to the adamant to "quench" their creations. Likewise, the Zarth would Need to travel to the outer fire to form the most stubborn stones and metals, including adamant. The Zarth outposts usually are based near the Horizon.
The layer of Solid-clouds generally insulates the rest of TwinWorld from the Outer Fire.
Creatures of the Outer Fire
Anything that lives in the outer fire will have exeedingly short lifespans, probably maxing out at a few days.
crazy fire birds
occasionally powerful fay descend and ravage the upper layers of Faierie. These creatures are iconic of the Outer Fire: A creature of pure fire and magic, with no definite shape. These fay are only stopped by the fact they they burn out within a few minutes.
- Yes! Very cool idea! This would really be a form of the classic "fire elemental". Do we want to include elementals in Faierie as a distinct concept, or are there merely more or less exotic forms of Fay?
- exotic, if not legendary forms of fay. Down by the Adamant are huge beings of stone... but they are slow and they just don't care if your there. the true inverse of the fire elementals which are ultra fast, and love or hate everything! ooo! that would make like a huge everlasting war in the outer fire between the elementals themselves, so its super dangerous because of all the colateral damage.
Tiny bugs that eat stuff. These could venture out from the outer fire in huge swarms to consume material that gets too close. When they die, their bodies fall like cinders, possibly igniting fires on the earth below.
One of the shortest lived, but fastest creatures in the Outer Fire, the lightning wyrm can flash across the sky in a few seconds. They mostly live deep in the outer fire, but occasionally get close enough to the core that they are visible from within the walls of Aether. Lightning wyrms feed on fireflys and dense fire patches, and their flight across the sky hearalds an inevitable rain of dust from the sky, the leavings of the wyrm's meal.
Both the Fay and the Zarth have outposts on the edge of (and occasionally inside) the outer fire. The fay use sky vines or merely create their dwellings out of the fire itself. The Zarth have large shielded outposts, supported on anti-gravity alloys and serviced by freight lifters from Zarth, far below.
Could the Pure Flame be harnessed somehow? As a weapon, source of energy, or entertainment?
- I'd say, yest to all three. Enchanted flame sculptures, bottled flame from the outer fire and flame elemental pets should all be possible.Ziggy
