We discussed the possibility (probability?) of Durand as an Immortal from Twinworld, rather than a Faerie or Zarth.  This helps explain why his children exhibit traits of both.

The HOZZ brother's father. Durand is an abnormally manly character for the world of Faerie, making him an outsider. He is a potent Fae who married a human changeling, then traveled to Earth to hide the children from the Fayrie King's draft.

This guy is probably important. We probably won't tell the readers what's up with him for a while but its extremely crucial for us to know if we want to do any sort of effective story telling. So lets start making stuff up and scrapping things we don't like.

idea rant

I'm going to assume for discussion purposes that Durand is a fay from the Sky Vine region. He used to live in a giant city tethered between the [Great Tree] and a huge cloud, truly iconic of a vine city. A maverick, angry, long-lived Fire Elemental ravaged generally toatsed the cloud. Durand and a contingent of the finest Fay acceded to dispatch the creature, which they did, but not before the cloud was beyond hope. As the cloud crumbled it drove the city to the ground miles bellow. Tens of thousands of Fay died. The aftermath was a a huge concentration of Fay dust, which resulted in a enormously successful forest and some of the largest in the world. Durand built house prime in the forest next to the wreckage and lived there for some time in grief after loosing everyone he knew.

Durand began to experiment with magic, something that few Fay had ever done. The only reason that the lethal amounts of Fay dust did not kill Durand was his constant use of magic on, in, and around house Prime (we really need a better name). After many years (decades?) of Durand's excessive use of magic, the surrounding surface became afraid of him as he used strange magic and he belonged in the Vines. When they came do drive out/kill him, he fled to the earth.

take what you want out of this, I'm not sure taking the whole thing is a very good idea. The things I do like is huge disaster creating a sacred/forbidden area in Fay that is highly dangerous. And some opening for Durand to do the unspeakable and marry a human. (like loosing his culture and "moral" reference)
